Christmas in the air

The official start of Christmas kicked off with switching on the Christmas lights in Salisbury’s Market Square on Thursday 16th November.

Assembling with the students a good 15 minutes beforehand, did not save us from having to make our way through the crowd.

There were already hundreds of people waiting in anticipation for the festive lights to illuminate the city and the glittering firework display.

It is hard to describe the feeling which filled the air but it felt unmistakably christmassy with the magical, spicy smell of mulled wine, cinnamon and roasted chestnuts.

At 19:00 the excitement began with the countdown accompanied by special guest appearances by national soap star, British actor Antony Cotton, and of course, Father Christmas himself.

Some moments later the whole square flooded with warm yellow light, which got everyone into the festive spirit.

This sparkly winter wonderland event also marked the beginning of the city’s Thursday late night shopping which, we decided to take advantage of afterwards. Why not?

Don’t forget, the Christmas Market will be also here next week!
